At Extendicare Somerset, we strive to meet the increasing care needs of our residents, families and our community. Our professional staff, which includes occupational therapists, physiotherapists, recreation therapists, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, dietitian and social worker, provide care for individuals with many complex needs. Residents and families can rest assured that our competent team - who are on staff 24-hours per day - will manage their health and social needs.
Nursing Care
At Extendicare Somerset, we achieve our nursing care goals through the Wellness Model of Care. Care goals are determined with the resident and family, as well as other members of the interdisciplinary team in order to meet residents’ physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual needs.
Professional nursing staff are onsite 24-hours a day. Care aides provide hands-on care at the bedside, assisting residents with the essential activities of daily living. Accurate record keeping, as a component of our quality improvement activities, ensures that provincial, regional, and Extendicare standards are met, reviewed and evaluated on a regular basis.
Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can live life to its fullest in a safe, supportive and caring environment. Our staff continue to promote resident independence by providing them with the assistance that they require and recognizing successes in efforts.

Dietary Services
We strive to meet the individual nutritional needs of our residents by providing nutritious, appetizing, well-balanced meals. The menu is developed by a team of registered dietitians and meets Canada’s Food Guide and legislative requirements. Residents' preferences are accommodated and alternate choices are offered at each meal.
We value menu input from our resident council and encourage its members or the council to make suggestions for special events and treats. Our registered dietitian observes meals and takes part in swallowing assessments to ensure we are meeting the needs of each resident on a consistent basis.
Social Work Services
Admission to a long-term care facility is not an easy adjustment for new residents and those who care for them. Our social worker can provide support and assistance through this transition. As a member of our interdisciplinary team, the social worker provides provides supportive counselling, information and education with regard to adjustment, psychosocial and financial issues, guardianship, trusteeship, and referrals to appropriate community resources as needed.
With a broad knowledge of family dynamics, community resources and a compassionate and sensitive approach to continuing care, palliative care and assistance with end-of-life concerns, our social worker provides professional service to enhance the quality of life of all who live and visit at Extendicare Somerset.

Resident Programs
Continuing therapeutic needs are provided in the comfort of our home through our rehabilitation and restorative care programs. The occupational therapy department provides services aimed at enabling an individual to maintain, improve and/or restore functional performance. Assessments include walking, transfers, wheelchairs and positioning. Cognitive ability, communication and perceptual skills are also assessed. The goals of the department are resident-centred and designed to assist the resident to reach his or her optimum potential.
Our creative, caring and energetic program staff offer many exciting social and therapeutic programs. Programs are presented in the five holistic care areas (intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual and physical) in order to meet the needs and interests of all residents.
Recreation programming is provided seven days per week with evening programs offered Monday to Friday. Some of the programs offered include bingo, breakfast club, movies, walking program, campfire sing-alongs, baking, reminiscing and happy hour, just to name a few. Family members are encouraged to join in the fun!
