Nursing Care
At Extendicare Starwood we achieve our nursing care goals through the Wellness Model of Care. Care goals are determined with the resident and family, as well as other members of the interdisciplinary team. Desired levels of independence, dignity, and personal preference are all part of the planning process, making each resident feel welcome and at home, while meeting their specific needs. This is achieved through Extendicare programs like Health Trac, Guardian Angel and C.A.R.E.

Professional nursing staff are onsite 24-hours a day. Care aides provide hands-on care at the bedside, assisting residents with the essential activities of daily living. Accurate record keeping, as a component of our quality improvement activities, ensures that provincial, regional, and Extendicare standards are met, reviewed and evaluated on a regular basis.

Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can live life to its fullest in a safe, supportive and caring environment.

Dietary Services
Good nutrition and attractive, tasty meals are essential to our dietary service. Our registered dietitian assesses the nutritional status of the residents at Starwood and in consultation with residents, families and staff, a nutritional care plan is created for each resident. Recommendations are then made to optimize each resident's food intake and nutrition while at the same time respecting the individual's choices and quality of life.

The Resident Food Committee meets regularly to discuss the changes they would like on the menu. The total dining experience is important to us and is assured through ongoing communication and feedback.

Social Work Services

The move to a long-term care home can be difficult for residents and their loved ones. Our social worker can help residents and families become acquainted and accustomed to this new living environment.

The social worker, a member of our leadership team, provides supportive counselling, information and education with regard to adjustment, psychosocial, and financial issues, guardianship, trusteeship and as-needed referrals to appropriate community resources.

Resdent Programs
At Extendicare Starwood we believe that physical conditioning increases residents' feelings of independence and self-worth, as they work hand in hand with our rehabilitation team.

A staff physiotherapist conducts assessments and together with the resident and his or her family members, develops a suitable rehabilitation or restorative care program. In the comfort of our own home, residents actively participate in walking programs, strength and balancing training and range of motion exercises.

We also provide our residents with social and therapeutic programs which meet residents' physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual needs. We value resident choice and lifestyle, which plays a major role in program planning.

Activity programs are offered seven days a week and include: outings, social dinners, movies, Bingo, discussion groups, cards and games, theme parties, crafts, special meals events, and much more. Special occasions, holidays and seasonal events also contribute to the diversity of our programs.

We encourage families and friends to participate in any of our activity programs with residents.
