Health Care Services

Nursing Care
The purpose of the nursing department is to provide resident-focused care in a family centred, homelike environment, which enhances the physical and mental attributes of individual residents by maintaining maximum independence through the provision of holistic care. At Extendicare Elmview, we continue to enhance our skills and abilities to meet the increasing care needs of our residents, families and our community. Quality care is our priority and we strive to ensure that all the resident needs are met and the care is consistent with professional standards of practice.

Extendicare Elmview has a six-bed Quick Response Unit which provides an alternative service to the emergency department observation beds for those individuals above the age of 65 years who do not require acute care observation or acute care support services.

Admissions are coordinated through the System Wide Admission and Discharge Department (SWADD) in consultation with acute cares social work services. The SWADD coordinators and social workers assess potential clients and determine appropriateness for admission into the Quick Response Unit utilizing admission criteria that was developed by Extendicare Elmview and the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region.

The unit’s philosophy is based firmly on a community focus using the interdisciplinary team model of care. The team consists of the client, the family, physician, physiotherapist, facility social worker, pharmacist, nurse, SWADD coordinator, and acute care social worker.

Discharge planning is an important component of services offered by the interdisciplinary team. Individuals will be discharged back to the community or to a facility that provides nursing care, dependant on individual needs, as assessed collaboratively by the Quick Response Unit staff and SWADD.

The services provided to the clients of the Quick Response unit include the following:

  • Interdisciplinary assessment
  • Non-acute crisis intervention
  • Community-based care planning
  • Personal care
  • Client and family teaching and support
  • Recreation and socialization opportunities
  • Support services (dietary, laundry, housekeeping)
  • Physician coverage that includes admitting orders, as well as medical assessment at the facility, referrals to specialists, and diagnostic services required.

At Extendicare Elmview, registered nursing professionals are scheduled 24-hours a day. Personal care is provided by special care aides. We are proud to offer the primary caregiver model, with dedicated staff assigned to each Unit. This provides each person with an opportunity to have consistent caregivers; increasing familiarity, trust and promoting positive, supportive relationships with the resident and his or her family.

Partners in Care
Extendicare Elmview maintains well-established partnerships with individuals and groups from within our community who are versatile, responsive, compassionate and committed to providing superior customer service to our residents and clients.

Resident Programs

- Social/Therapeutic Programs

Extendicare Elmview offers a variety of recreational, social and spiritual programming for residents to attend, participate in and enjoy. Program development is focused on the residents’ needs, including intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual, and physically based programs providing opportunities for participation, based on personal likes and interests. We encourage independence and choice by our residents in facilitating daily programs.

Outings to community special events, attractions and shopping expeditions are regularly organized, particularly from early spring until late fall. Winter months offer other opportunities, such as Family Nights, as our weather often encourages more indoor activity! Increased special in-house events and entertainment provide the perfect comfort during the winter months.

Recreational programming is offered seven days a week. Families are also encouraged to participate. Regular exercise programs, musical entertainment, pub nights, birthday parties, bingo, cards and games provide ample opportunity to socialize and meet other people. Several church services are held for residents of Protestant and Catholic faiths. Special arrangements can be made to accommodate the cultural diversity of our residents.

Evening programs are offered five times a week and often involve special entertainment. Families are encouraged to participate in programs with their loved one if desired, and family gatherings are welcome. The recreation staff would be happy to assist you in booking space for a special event. A barbeque is also available for private family events to create another treasured memory. Detailed daily record-keeping ensures current information is always available at your request, regarding resident likes, interests and participation in programs.

Other programs that ensure our residents’ unique needs and interests are acknowledged include pet therapy, music programs, board games, cooking and baking, barbeques, outdoor walks, and discussion groups. This is only a small part of our varied programs.

Creativity, innovation, variety, quality and support are the cornerstones of our programs. Suggestions and new ideas are always welcome as we strive to grow and meet the changing needs of our residents.
