Our office staff are competent, caring and friendly members of the “Sunset Team”.  They offer a variety of services to residents, families and staff.  These services include reception, clerical support, staff scheduling and record management.  Our business office staff are essential to the overall coordination of facility services.

Dietary Services 
At Extendicare Sunset, we provide a five-week cycle menu of tasty, nutritious, home-cooked meals and refreshments.  Special considerations are incorporated into a relaxed breakfast program (Breakfast Club) which allows for a more flexible morning routine. A dietary consultant works with our staff to assess the nutritional requirements of our residents. Our dedicated staff, together with the consultant, develop meal plans to meet each individual's needs. Our resident council, who represents our clients, meet monthly to discuss, review and make suggestions regarding the menu.

Education Services
We pride ourselves in being able to offer a variety of services through our education department. Continuing staff education enhances the quality of care provided to our residents. Comprehensive orientations for new employees ensures smooth transitions to the various facility positions. Special focus is given to education related to infection control and workplace safety. Families can feel confident that knowledgeable, skillful staff are delivering the highest standard of care to their loved ones.

Environmental Services

Laundry:

At Extendicare Sunset, we have an on-site laundry department that offers full laundry services for both personal and facility linens.  We have daily delivery of the clean laundry to ensure good quality service in a home-like environment. Our commercial laundry system is designed to process hundreds of articles of clothing each day in a way that meets strict sanitary guidelines. For example, higher temperatures are necessary for infection control when many people live under one roof.

Housekeeping:

Our housekeeping staff takes pride in ensuring that Extendicare Sunset is clean and inviting for residents, families and staff. We are dedicated to providing a safe, home-like environment. As Sunset team members, our environmental department aides go beyond housekeeping duties to assist with accompanying clients to meals and working alongside other departments to complete tasks such as bed making and laundry distribution.

Hairstylist Services
We are pleased to offer hair care to residents with the understanding that pride in one’s appearance enhances overall feelings of well-being. The Beauty Shop is open Monday to Friday. Haircuts for both men and women, permanents, colour rinses, shampoo and sets are available. Hairdressing services are charged to the resident.

Maintenance Services
Our dedicated maintenance department uses a practical approach to building and equipment maintenance. A preventative maintenance program involves inspection and maintenance of facility equipment used by staff and residents. Our department maintains clean and safe interior and exterior environments for residents, visitors and staff.

Recreation Program
Our recreation department offers a wide variety of programs for residents to attend, participate and enjoy. Recreation programs are offered in the five holistic needs categories: intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual and physical. These provide a balanced opportunity for residents based on their specific needs and interests.  Assessment of past leisure activities, visiting with new resident, and family input all are taken into consideration when placing a resident in a specific program. Resident independence and choice is encouraged in facilitating daily programs.

Regular outings are planned to encourage and achieve community involvement.  Outings to community festivals, events and venues are regularly organized.  A wheelchair accessible van is onsite for transporting residents to these events.

There are also special events and entertainment planned throughout the year within the facility. Residents are encouraged to invite family and friends to some of these events.  Examples include Christmas family dinner, dances, special entertainment, BBQ’s etc.

Our recreation programs ensure that the unique needs and interests of all residents are acknowledged. We offer regular opportunities to participate in pet therapy, shopping, church services, music programs, bingo, board games, cooking, baking, barbecues, outdoor walks and discussion groups. These are only a small sample of the varied programs that are offered.

Lovely outdoor patios are available for use by residents and families and are also used extensively by the recreation department.

Qualified recreation staff provide and facilitate programs seven days a week and evening programs five days a week.  Daily record keeping (resident attendance) ensures current information is available on request.

Families are encouraged to participate in programs with their loved ones if desired and family gatherings are welcome. The recreation staff would be happy to assist you to book space for a special event.

Innovation, education, variety and support are methods that our recreation department uses to deliver quality programs at Extendicare Sunset.

Religious and Spiritual Services
At Extendicare Sunset, we have an active pastoral care committee with representation from a variety of denominations. Our pastoral care staff provide weekly church services, pastoral care visits are available for any resident, staff or family to call upon.

Spiritual programs are also offered. These include hymn sing, weekly Bible study and inspirational singing groups. All spiritual services and programs are held in a non-denominational setting.

Families are encouraged to notify their home church to have the clergy come into our home for visits as well as to provide the opportunity for receiving communion and blessings within some denominational practices.

Residents’ choices are fully respected in defining their religious and/or spiritual needs.

Social Work Services
Extendicare Sunset recognizes that admission into a long-term care facility can be a challenging time for you and your loved one. Many changes and emotions are experienced when one moves into a long-term care facility. Our social worker can help you and your family become acquainted and accustomed to this new living environment. She can also provide ongoing support to both residents and their loved ones.

As a member of our interdisciplinary team, our social worker provides supportive counselling, information and education with regard to adjustment, psychosocial issues, financial issues, end-of-life care and referrals to appropriate community resources.  Social work services strive to enhance the quality of life for all those who live, visit and work at Extendicare Sunset.

Volunteer Services
Our volunteers are an integral part of the “Sunset Team” – valued beyond measure.  Volunteers provide that extra hand and listening ear to residents.  They augment the recreation department by assisting with special programs such as outings, dances, bingos, individual visits etc.

Our volunteers bring varied skills and life experiences.  They include retired people, students who wish to access volunteer hours for school projects, members from other community service programs, and even the very young who also have something to offer.

Volunteer candidates participate in a facility orientation, submit a criminal check and sign a Pledge of Confidentiality before commencing volunteer activities.  Resident safety is of the utmost importance. Our recreation staff match volunteers to residents and programs according to their skills, interests and talents. Family members are encouraged to participate in our volunteering program by accompanying their loved one to programs whether it be in the facility or on an outing. We always welcome new volunteers.

Young Adult Program
In addition to providing care to a geriatric population, we are proud to offer care to residents under the age of 65 years.  Under the auspices of our Young Adult Program, the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Authority has targeted our facility for the admission of this population.  This diversity in resident age contributes to the rich environment at our facility.  Specialized age-related recreation programs are offered to our “younger” residents which encourages community participation and social interaction.
