Nursing Care
At Extendicare Preston, we continue to enhance our skills and abilities to meet the increasing care needs of our residents, families and our community. Our professional staff provide care for individuals with many complex needs. Residents can be assured that our competent team of Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Special Care Aides will manage their health-related needs 24-hours per day.
In keeping with our philosophy, individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias have the opportunity to live life to its fullest in a safe and caring environment. Our staff are trained to promote resident independence by providing them with the assistance that they require.
We value knowledge and skills and promote continuous education for team members, residents and their families. The knowledge and skills acquired by all are used to improve our standards of practice.
Dietary Services
We pride ourselves on providing nutritious home-cooked meals. Our head cook and the resident and family council regularly review our meal plans and make suggestions for improvements. Our visiting dietician works closely with our caregivers to assess the nutritional requirements of residents and integrate their needs into a balanced nutritional meal plan. The total dining experience is important to us and is assured through ongoing communication and feedback.
Social Work Services
Our social worker can help you and your family to become acquainted and accustomed to this new living environment. The social worker, a member of our leadership team, provides supportive counselling, information and education with regard to adjustment, psychosocial, and financial issues, guardianship, trusteeship, and as needed referrals to appropriate community resources.

Resident Programs
- Rehabilitation/Restorative Care
The elderly may experience such conditions as general weakness, gait problems, de-condition from recent hospitalization, contractures, decreased range of motion, fractures, depression due to decrease in independence, and social isolation. At Extendicare Preston, we believe that physical conditioning increases residents' feelings of independence and self-worth as they work hand-in-hand with our physical therapist and nursing team.
Working with this team, the physical therapist conducts assessments and together with residents and family members, develops a suitable rehabilitation or restorative care program. In the comfort of their home, residents actively participate in walking programs and strengthening exercises. A speech language therapist is available through the Saskatoon Health Region to provide speech and swallowing assessments.

- Social/Therapeutic Programs
Extendicare Preston recognizes the importance of providing our residents with both social and therapeutic programs. Certified activity aides ensure that each resident's physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual needs are met. Extendicare Preston values individual choice and lifestyle, which plays a major role in program planning.
Activity programs are offered seven days a week and include: dances, social dinners, shopping excursions, movie nights, bingo, discussion groups, cards and games, theme parties, diner's club, bowling, regular visits from daycare and school groups and much more. Special occasions, holidays and seasonal events also contribute to the diversity of our programs.
We also offer programs that include family involvement. We believe that these types of programs help create wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. All in all, our aim is to enhance the quality of life for our residents as we provide Quality Care in a Homelike Environment.
