Complex continuing care is designed for patients who are palliative in nature or whose complex care needs cannot be met within a long term care facility and for those who through rehabilitation services may require a transition to a lesser care level. Some services provided in a complex continuing care setting include IV therapy, complex wound care and high frequency diabetic monitoring. Complex continuing care homes provide 24 hour care by registered nurses, registered practical nurses and personal support workers, physician visits, access to diagnostic and laboratory services and other health professionals. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, dietary services, pastoral care, recreation, social work, housekeeping, laundry and administrative services are also all included in the complex continuing care setting.
